Year 8: another win
The Year 8 football team progressed through to the next round of the cup with a hard fought 1-0 win (after extra time) against a physical NK outfit.
Joe Christopher continued in goal, with Mark Gee, Matty Clarke and Mike Baker lining up in defence alongside the versatile Phil Robertson. In midfield Sam Biggs and Jack Fixter started in the middle, with Jacob Thompson and Ryan Asher providing the width. Will Sime started up front alongside James Holden. On the bench were Lucas Cooling and the shinpad-less Thomas Trimble.
The game set into a pattern early on which was to last throughout the match. LSST would knock the ball around, playing some good football and then come up against the towering NK centre backs who would thwart their attacks.
Perhaps the best chance of a scrappy first half fell to an NK player, forcing Joe Christopher into a regulation save. LSST had been restricted to long range shots.
The pattern continued in much the same vein during the second half, although it must be said towards the end of the second half more and more openings were available to the LSST forward players, with Thomas Trimble, Will Sime and Ryan Asher all going close.
LSST faced up to extra time for the second match in a row, and Jacob Thompson's re-emergence as a rolling substitute made all the difference. With just two minutes on the clock, with the manager already formulating a list of penalty takers in his mind, Thompson won a 50/50 challenge on the touchline, cut inside and teed up Sam Biggs who smashed an unstoppable drive into the top of the net from 20 yards out.
A really hard fought victory, built upon a solid defence well marshalled by captain Clarke and once again finished by talisman Biggs. Well done!
