What is music?

Is the gap between the notes music?

Will Wivell

The gap between the notes is not in itself music, in the same way a single note or chord is not music. Music is a specially arranged sequence of sounds - the art of sound, in a way - and factors such as sounds and 'gaps' are merely contributory to the overall effect. Right - here's a metaphor to sink your teeth into: music is like a house. The musical notes are like the bricks, and the gaps between the notes are like the cement, filling in the areas between the bricks. You wouldn't call a brick a house. You wouldn't call cement a house.
